This class gives you a chest opener, hip opener, back bend, side bend, gentle flexion of the spine, forward fold, twist, elevated legs and savasana.  It can be done in 30 minutes or easily extended to an hour, depending on what you have time for.  By all means just do a couple of the poses if that is all you have time for.  We don't all have yoga props in our homes but there are plenty of items around the house that make for good substitutions; pillows, blankets, towels, shoe box in lieu of block between the leg, bags of legumes instead of sandbags, books even.

The first two poses can be held for at least 5 - 10 minutes and then counter the second pose with windshield wiper legs a few times, the side be...

You know when you are doing what you love when it never seems like work and I just love running these retreats.  I was so fortunate again this year to host such lovely women and show them what we have to offer here on the islands and share my passion of Yoga with them.  Three of the ladies came from Ontario and the fourth from New York. They were hard pressed to choose their favourite, but whale watching is surely a big hit.  One of the ladies went for a walk down my side street (Lovers Lane) and was doing face time with her husband when all of a sudden a whale did a full breach that both she and her husband in Ontario got to witness.  How unbelievable it that!  It only rained on Saturday for a bit but we still managed to head o...

Mandalas have been around for many years and used in different cultures to represent in some cases the earth, sun, moon and the cycle of life.  The word mandala is the Sanskrit word for circle.  They were also used as a meditation tool and were required to be appealing to hold attention.  There were certain requirements for it to be a meditation tool and many of the mandalas you see today including the ones I paint are not that sort as there is no set way that they have to be done.  It is a very relaxing hobby painting mandalas and you don't always know what you are going to end up with, it depends on the size of the stone (smooth beach stone is best), paper or canvas you use as well as the size of the dotting tools.  Some peop...

I am really excited about my next gastronomical adventure which will be to make rejuvelac and eventually make a nut cheese.  I had lots of buckwheat groats so I am going to use those and follow the instructions here:  http://www.plantfoods.org/demos/rejuvelac/

If you don't want to use buckwheat you can use another grain but check the above website out because it is slightly different times than the buckwheat which is faster.

First day

- Rinse 1 cup raw buckwheat groats thoroughly then cover with filtered water and let sit for 30 minutes then drain and rinse.  I am using my sprouting container but you can use a strainer placed over a bowl and cover with cheesecloth or a tea towel.  My container comes with a cov...

I guess I have too much time on my hands here in Freeport but I decided to try making bread from my own yeast and thought I would share the process with you.  My friend, Sohee Mishra, inspired me to try this after seeing her post about it.  I am using some of her instructions.  This will hopefully allow me to cut down on the cost of bread because my favourite is now $7.50 a loaf for ezekiel bread.

Day 1

Place 100 grams of raisins (roughly 1 cup- I used organic Thompsons)  in a jar with a lid (I used a mason jar that is slightly less than a quart) so that when you have the water (1 1/4 cup) and the raisins in jar it takes up approximately 80% of the space.  As you can see mine is a little bigger so we wil...

This Jelly is more flavourful than apple jelly with a slight tang to it and was a total hit with the yoga retreat ladies, I will be sure to have some on hand next retreat season.  You can also make a rosehip syrup or dehydrate them for tea.  The rosehips can also be enjoyed raw provided you avoid the seeds as they have an irritating, hairy covering.   I have developed a real liking for them and have a snack every time I come across a rose bush.

2 Quarts of fully ripe rosehips

6 cups of water

1/2 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice

3 + 1/2 cups sugar

1 package of liquid certo

Clean rosehips, trim ends & place in pot with the water & bring to a boil, simmer till tender approximately 1 hour.  Mash...

The retreat ladies requested my version of this recipe because it is a little healthier than the original which has shortening, white flour and double the sugar but the healthy version is just as tasty.  It took me forever to get this recipe up because I was trying to put in an imovie format but technology got the better of me so here it is written by hand!

Hello Everyone:

I know it has been too long since the last blog but there was so much to do to get ready for my first retreat, hopefully it won't be so long until the next one.  The renovations and decorating got completed on time with the exception of my bedroom which was the overflow room while everyone was here.  Hopefully it will be finished this fall because I desperately need closets!

We had a full house for last weeks retreat and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.  The ladies were lovely and they all got along so well together and all had a wonderful time.

The food was excellent including lunch at Lavena's Catch Cafe, whale watching thrilling; with lots of whales & their antics, a wonderful educat...

Well, my belongings are probably sitting in New Brunswick right about now while the movers, Ron and Alex, have a couple of days rest.  I couldn't have asked for better guys to do the job, they are so personable, helpful, efficient and professional.  (Halifax Transfer/United Van Lines) I am on my way Monday afternoon, hoping to arrive in Halifax at 7:30 p.m..  My sister and I are being picked up and driven to Bridgewater where we will stay the night instead of Halifax.  They pick us up in the morning and take us to pick up my car and then we head to Annapolis Royal for an 11:00 a.m. appointment.  At the moment I have a little downtime at my friend Sue's place doing absolutely nothing and carless, I might add.  My car was...

Hi again, things are moving along so quickly now.  I am finished teaching at Brock-Niagara Centre for Health & Well-Being.  Scott Stevens from the Centre, along with my students, put on an amazing luncheon after the final class.  I was so touched by all the kind words about their yoga experience with me as a teacher and also their prayers for my future endeavours with the retreats.  They raised a fist full of money for me and I have already got it spent on 2 pairs of Hunter Rubber boots which will last me for the rest of my days and be a necessary accessory for life in the Maritimes.  I will sorely miss these people and look forward to seeing some of them attend my retreats this year and in years to come.  Bring 5 people and the...
